Become Your Dream
Since I have begun running in Central Park, I keep seeing these three words along the way. Next to the phrase, there is often a picture of a fish jumping out his tank.
After a little research, I found out that the phrase was coined by an upper east side artist, De La Vega, who apparently has been spreading his through-provoking words throughout the city for quite some time. He started as a mere graffitist in Harlem, and now has his own museum in the East Village. The picture above is of De La Vega’s famous mural on 95th Street.
It’s just a simple thought, yet holds so much meaning. A little reminder not to lose track of what’s important to you and what you want out of life. In a city like New York where there are so many people, places and opportunities, it can be easy to lose yourself, and most importantly your dreams, in the chaos of everyday life.
When I see these words it’s like I automatically have a more positive outlook on life and a drive to work harder and reach my full potential. I can’t help but feeling inspired to jump out of the tank and “become my dream.”
Sweet Sixteen
last night we headed over to Newark’s Prudential Center for some NCAA tournament action. The UNC/ Marquette game wasn’t so exciting, but HELLO Kentucky! Personally, I didn’t really mind who won but I was hoping for double overtime to get the most out of our stellar seats.
Last night we went to wd~50 (Top Chef judge Wylie Dufresne’s lower east side restaurant). The food was a combination of bizarre yet tasty dishes with a wide array of unique flavors and ingredients. Each dish looked like a piece of art. They were so beautiful you hesitate to dig in and mess it up. For appetizers we had cold fried chicken (with buttermilk ricotta, tabasco and cavier) and shrimp spaghetti - both were very good. I could have eaten an entire pot of the shrimp spaghetti by myself vs. the ‘one bite’ to split amongst 3 of us; but i’m not complaining since that was just the beginning). For the main course we ordered black bass with artichokes, forbidden rice and white chocolate-green olive sauce; scallops with chicken fried lentils, radish and lychee sauce; and wagyu flap steak with barley, malt and turnip. The black bass was, by far, my favorite. The white chocolate-green olive sauce was to.dye.for! Runner up was the scallops. The wagyu steak just didn’t do it for me, i was really surprised at how tough it was. I am one of those people who loves steak when it melts in my mouth, otherwise I don’t love steak. For dessert we had the camomile almond cake with celery, pears and dandelion root. The dessert was great, but THE BEST THING OF ALL was the complimentary frozen rice krispy meringue treates they brought out at the very end. If you ask me, Wylie Dufresne could make a career out of just selling those little balls of heaven from a store front window on Spring Street ~ look out cupcakes by Melissa.
In all seriousness, it was totally worth it for the experience. The chef is impressive, to say the least and the food was both tasty and creative. The portions are very dainty, so it’s not the place to go when you are in the mood to pig out. Although we ordered a decent amount of food, the price was not outrageous and no one left hungry. All in all, it was a very enjoyable night. Great food coupled with great company - what more can you ask for.
Ugg I recently bought this on the Kindle.. and I just can’t get into it. For some reason it bothers me more to have an unread book on my kindle than on my shelf.. I give it another 5% before i’m finito!
Super excited for my new purchase! The Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS, now I can track my time, distance, pace, heart rate and even calories burend during runs. AH! I am patiently waiting it’s arrival.
Pic of the east river taken during my 12 mile run this morning. It was a gorgeous New York morning and I’m so happy to have accomplished 12 miles since More Magazine Half is only 2 weeks away. Only problem was I had to re-route once I realized today was the NYC Half (figured it was best just to avoid Central Park all together).. So instead I entered the east river path in midtown, ran down to Brooklyn Bridge, through Battery Park, then up the west side Hudson River Park to midtown, and across to the east side/aka square one!
Last night was Tracy’s birthday celebration at Poco. It was a great party - the menu was outstanding (mushroom croquettes, pulled pork sliders, lobster mac & cheese, steak lollipops, calamari frittas) and the sangria kept flowing. After Poco we relocated to the back room for bottle service “prohibition style”. It was a great night, although I was feeling a little sluggish today. (I’ve been trying to limit the the serious partying to only special occasions - last night clearly qualified).
Today, CC, Julie and I were having brunch at the Pig & Whistle when I realized this was panning out to be a really enjoyable weekend. On my walk home from brunch I had a major craving for a spa day. I almost impulsively walked into the closest one i could find and asked for a massage, but my better judgment kicked in (thank god). I can’t justify spending $140 now when spa week is right around the corner.
Tonight I am having a relaxing night on the couch so i’ll be well rested for my run in central park tomorrow. I’m running the More/Fitness magazine half marathon in 2 weeks and my training schedule says i’m running 12 miles tomorrow (fingers crossed!)
